Pentagon Phoenix Reconstruction Project
After the tragic events of September 11th, 2001, Stanton Engineering worked with the KCE/AMEC Team to re-design the fire suppression and alarm systems, as well as all life safety and egress systems in the affected areas of Wedges One and Two. This $508M project was an intensive effort to complete in one year while the building remained operational.
The new fire suppression and alarm systems were required, in part, to support the modernization of the Pentagon. The building was renovated to meet current health, fire and life safety codes and to provide access for the physically disabled. The entire project was designed using the metric system.
The Stanton Engineering team was faced with a number of design challenges during this very short reconstruction project. Because of the unique configuration of this building, several fire and building code equivalencies and variances were evaluated. Stanton Engineering's design also included the provision of temporary fire protection systems to protect current occupants as the wedge was being renovated.
Stanton Engineering's designers carefully detailed the systems designs with the aid of AUTOCAD in coordination with the KCE team. This process verified that all utilities fit and directed the contractor to the correct location of each system. Our engineers worked with KCE to meet the 8-month accelerated design schedule for the Phoenix project area. To accomplish the extensive field investigation and on-site coordination with the contractor and to meet the accelerated schedule, we met at a temporary field office every day in the old fire station at the Pentagon.
