Stanton Engineering Services was responsible for the fire alarm, mass notification and detection, sprinkler and standpipe system design, as well as for life safety egress analysis/code compliance on this $564M project.  Stanton Engineering also provided site fire water supply and fire department access analysis.  In addition we provided computerized fire and smoke modeling for both the four story atrium and three below grade floors and assisted the HDR team with smoke control and stair pressurization designs.  Furthermore, we also developed and provided timed egress calculations and modeling to ensure adequate life safety for this large, limited access mission support facility.  The project is comprised of a mixed use, 1,100,000 SF, four story command and control center with significant underground facilities and satellite support facilities, including utility plant, warehouse and visitor processing facilities. Data centers, totaling several hundred thousand square feet, will feature air sampling smoke detection and other essential fire safety features. The fire alarm system will interface with, and control occupied area smoke removal system in coordination with the HVAC system along with a four-story atrium smoke removal system.

The facility consists of the following major components:
  • Mission support and mission critical programs to accommodate sensitive compartmented information facility, open storage and non-classified functions on raised access floors with a robust underfloor cable infrastructure to accommodate adaptability and flexibility as requirements evolve.
  • A Global Operation Center with High-Altitude Electromagnetic Pulse shielding, which is treated like a building within a building.
  • 102 dedicated planning, meeting, training and conference rooms plus a 400 seat auditorium with retractable seating and video teleconferencing capability capabilities.
  • Support buildings include the visitor control center, loading dock and warehouse, and the central utility plant.

Stanton Engineering was a subcontractor to HDR-CUH2A for this project, demonstrating the ability of our firm to integrate our fire protection engineering and life safety analysis work with the project design team, government authorities, and end users.  As a follow on, we are providing construction period support for this project to ensure compliance with all applicable codes, regulations and design documents.
